Global to Local Workshop Series

Date: August 5-7,

Time:  10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Global to Local Workshop Series consists of three days of interactive presentations, group activities, cross-cultural dialogues, and nightly film screenings.

The workshops offer participants the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the environmental and social costs of globalized development, both in Ladakh and in their own lives and communities. They also learn about the multiple benefits of strengthening local communities and economies, and about inspiring localization initiatives in India and around the world.

Workshop Descriptions:

Workshop 1 – Ladakh Environment & Development: Past & Present

This first workshop will focus on Ladakh – its past, present and possible future(s). Topics will include Ladakh’s history, cultural and religious traditions, political context, governance structures, as well as key social and environmental issues

Workshop 2 – Rethinking Globalization & Development

Starting from the context of Ladakh, this workshop broadens its focus to examine India’s experience(s) of globalization and development as an illustrative case of these larger, world-historical processes. The workshop will provide an overview and history of globalized development, as well as an assessment of its social, psychological and ecological consequences.

Workshop 3 – Towards an Economics of Happiness

This final workshop will examine the case for localization as a systemic alternative to economic globalization. Participants will learn about the multiple social, ecological and economic benefits of shifting from global to local, and about inspiring localization initiatives happening in India and around the world.
