Overview

Many women in rural areas still use clothes during menstruation as they cannot afford sanitary napkins. Mainly because sanitary napkins are manufactured using expensive machinery and so priced at a premium. As a result of these unhygienic practices, more than 70% of women suffer from reproductive tract infections, increasing the risk of contracting associated cancers. Thus, we at Jayaashree Industries decided to design a sanitary napkin making machine which can produce the sanitary napkins at low cost and make them available to all the women especially in the rural areas. We have been successful in our venture without compromising on the raw material used (which is not the unviable cotton) or quality of the product as compared to the multinationals. Moreover, we also aim to address the issue of rampant unemployment amongst the poor in rural, urban and semi-urban areas of all developing nations as this sanitary napkin-making unit is capable of creating a business that employs up to ten women. Hence Jayaashree Industries is attempting to offer livelihood, hygiene, dignity and empowerment to women all over. And we are doing so using a sustainable business framework.

Model

We sell our machines directly to rural women through the support of bank loans and not-for-profit organisations. A machine operator can learn the entire sanitary-napkin making process in three hours and then employ three others to help with processing and distribution. In addition the technology we use to manufacture the napkin is simple and non-chemical. In fact, the machine uses purely mechanical processes such as grinding and de-fibration, pressing and sealing to convert the raw material – high-quality pine wood pulp – into a napkin.  Contrary to a large-scale production model which requires Rs.3.5 crores as initial investment our sanitary napkin-making machine can be made available to a buyer for approximately Rs.75,000. Our model encourages women to participate in complete product life-cycles, not only as users, but also as technology designers, manufacturers, and marketing persons. Further, these women are the owners of their business. We thus aim to build a viable and sustainable enterprise that can be run efficiently by the stakholders themselves at the grassroots.

Team

Arunachalam Muruganantham, Founder

He had to discontinue education after SSLC (12th) because of family problems and was employed as a helper in a welding workshop.  He uncovered the need for an inexpensive solution to unsanitary and unhygienic practices around menstruation in rural India. He created and patented a machine which could manufacture low-cost sanitary napkins for less than a third of the cost of commercial pads.

How can you partner with us?

We would partner with organizations who are willing to make a social impact in health and sanitation of rural women by providing them these low cost sanitary napkins. We would help the corporates in designing their CSR engagements around this sector. Our model focuses on creating awareness regarding benefits of sanitary napkin over cloth which is most unhygienic for the women's health. We would partner with organizations in assisting us to reach out to the grassroots society and at the same time offering livelihood opportunities to the rural women folk. The company can assist the self help groups making these napkins have a repetitive market in their own areas which will enable them to expand their business enabling an upliftment in their lives.
